Working memory: the memory system responsible for the short term mental storage and manipulation of information: frontal lobes have the central executive, analogy: in a computer there are two means by which information is stored: Information processing model: information stays in short term memory and a new copy is sent into long term memory. you have it stored in 2 places now: information comes back from short term memory not long term memory, the modal model. captures average of what everyone proposes at the same time. Working memory: give people a set of items to remember and ask them to repeat it back to you in whatever order. this is called a free recall test (if it was a serial recall task, they would ask you to repeat it back in the same order: primacy effect. you do better at the beginning and end of the working memory test because of rehearsal.
