Lecture 11 Brain Damage 1. Receptive aphasias (problems with receiving language- input) Pure Word deafness: -problems in relating incoming sounds into representations which allow understanding of discourse -problems making language sense out of sounds THEY HEAR THE SOUNDS BUT CANNOT PUT INTO LANGUAGE -involve stroke in dorsal temporal area near primary receptive area (auditory) -normal ability to read write and speak -cannot repeat or commands unless written 2. Integrated Aphasia (problems with putting together info: nuts and bolts not there) -involves selecting and arranging meaningful units and there eventual conversion into comprehension coherent speech Wernikes Apahsia: - make unintelligible statements, chattering for long periods of time without making sense -words are not random though (not word salad) sounds like it makes sense -all musi
