PSYC12 Lecture 9 iClicker o males only question eg old men should stick to hitting on old women o but you wont see something that says black should stick to hitting on white women o that would be illegal same as making fun of obese people ageism can be discrimination based on age, any age even not being able to go to lcbo is still discrimination definitional speaking even if its for a good reason Stereotype threat towards elderly and make them underperform If you subtly remind elderly people that they dont have good memory, study found that they actually did worse on memory tests etc Ageism is a type of prejudice that is unique o It is one of those prejudices where all of us one day will enter this out-group and thus it will become an in-group and will probably experience this Perdue and Gurtman o Evaluative priming task o So old and young are subliminally primed o Then after that saw wrds that are positive or negative eg love and war o And dependent variable here is reaction time to wrds o Had to decide whether the wrds were good or bad o Eg primed with word old, then see word selfish, then have to say whether good or bad word o Idea is that if you dislike elderly you would be more likely to associate old with bad eg selfish than young with selfish
