- The Target Perspective
- A model of stigma- it is a relative new concept. It describes the processes that occur and how
people feel when they are victims of prejucdice.

What is it like to be a target? (video)
- In 1954 they asked children what dolls they preferred and most of the kids attributed the white
doll with positive characteristics. 15 out of 21 children liked the white doll. Even when the
participant was black they still chose the white doll, but when asked which one she looked like
she chose the black doll. This study mirrors Kenneth Clark and his wife’s experiment.
- It is unclear what these things mean, but it is evidence like this that shows that you shouldn’t
just look at the perpetrators but also the victims.
Change of Perspective
- Matthew Sheppard was a young gay man. On October 1978 he was tied up on a gate with his
head bashed in, they rushed him to the hospital but he died a couple days later. Two young men
with to a gay bar looking for a fight and they pretended that they were gay, they were friendly
with Mathew and said they wanted to go home and hookup, but they took him in an alley and
beat him up.
- Theses individuals purposely went to the gay bar to start trouble.
- The laws of this city changed because of this incident
Let’s look at the target’s point of view
- Up until now, discussed perceiver’s point of view
- It is important to look at what we are doing and how we are prejudices
- But we missed in some ways Mathew Sheppard’s story. What is is like to live as a gay in a certain
community, how are they treated? How do people cope and deal with it? Stigma
- Possession of a trait/ characteristic that is devalued by society
Abomination of Body
- Some people are born with a weird lip, and are stigmatized negatively even though you have no
control over it
- Excessive sweating is also something that someone can be born with and people are
embarrassed about it because they are negatively stigmatized in society.
Blemishes of Character
- As you get older you suffer from dementia, people can be made fun of because they might seem

- It is scketching out the psychology of what it is like to belong to a stigmatized group
- There are three things that in this model that predict an identity threat appraisal; that is

situational cue (number of people) that tells us about your type of people, Personal
characteristic, what kind of person are you dealing with.
