Document Summary

Studies largely applied to older adults, but it can also apply to young (juvenile ageism) Unlike other prejudices, elderly are out-group that will one day (become an in-group). We will all end up getting old. Dv: rt to words (faster rt = strong association) When they look at the word young there is an association to positive words and evaluate it more quickly. When see negative words, they evaluate those words more slowly. This suggest young might have positive association in the participant"s mind and makes it easier to evaluate a positive word and hard a negative word. Negative words more associated with old than young and vice versa. The problem with the study is that it does not generalize into societal environments. Dominance of youth culture (more targeted, cuz ya live longer. ) Fear of death (elderly remind us young people that we will eventually die) Instinct for self-preservation not to be reminded of death.
