Stigma: possession of a trait/characteristics that is devalued by society. Abominations of the body (being morbidly obese, cleft palate, sweating hyperhidrosis. ) Blemishes of character (someone suffering from dementia, eating disorder. Tribal markers (aspects of a person that mark ethnicity, race, culture. ) Voluntary responses: coping with threat, blaming discrimination, limit social comparisons, disidentification. Stigmatized people are disadvantaged economically & interpersonally (less likely to be your friend, scared of you, think of you differently, etc). Stigmatized have the same or higher self-esteem than non-stigmatized. Suggested that stigma can buffer self-esteem (makes you feel okay) Story of how i became stigmatized for protection. He thought he was gonna get a lot of interviews. Using stigma as an excuse to why good or bad things happen to you.
