Psychologists have observed some important ways in which our subjective classifications into groups often differ from what could be considered objective reality. Many of these biases may result from the basic ways we learn about which categories are important, and what features allow us to distinguish correctly between categories. You should be able to define the notion of entitativity, and be able to identify whether a particular group is likely to be more or less entitative. Category: division of people or things that is regarded has having a certain shared characteristic. Stereotype: knowledge, beliefs and expectations held about human groups. Entitative: the perception of a group as a unified whole, everybody is pretty much the same. When is a group more or less likely to be entitative. A group is more likely to be high in entitativity when members of the group do not vary as much from each other.
