PSYC23H3SLecture 3 Question how early do you learn Even if we cant remember things explicitly are we still influenced by those eventsPrenatal Experience For the last few decades there is a lot happening in the womb Your listening in on what you learn out there meaning the fetus is listening You have a preference to listen to mothers voice They will suck on the nipple that activates the mothers voice They remember the content of what they heard when they were in the womb When the mother reads the story they can remember the words of the story Just reading around a story repeatedly the infants will remember The way they test it is by sucking It assumes that they are attentive when they suck the nipple slowly taking it slowly If they are sucking fast then they are not paying attentionThe infants will come out of that womb they cry in the accent of their mothers tongue Theyll come out crying like German or French people There are unique signatures that can be linked to the style of crying A lot is happening They also develop food preferences Its food taste and smellSo its a lot happening in that early critical period Whats kind of also going on is that some of these experiences are having a lasting effect on our developmental and health outcome Theres been some theorizing over the last couple of decades of notions on biological vulnerability which were early significances prenatal programmingThere are mechanisms that we understand that contribute to the early biological vulnerability and impact of their life spanEarly Learning to HealthIncrease diabetes that was one important piece of evidence that supports the Barker hypothesisWhat happens to you in the womb affects your destinyThe predictive power of birth weight applies to us all Its better to be a heavier baby than a light weight baby There was a destiny on the health of each and every one of usWhats true of health may extend to our personalityHow people react to things is a big component to what makes them uniqueCore features of temperament The core is reactivity and recovery regulationThat methodological detail making the mother not hear it not everything has to be fed from the outside through the mother
