Document Summary

Psya01 lecture 2: there"s no soul in psychology. Relevance of soul: to pursue something scientifically one must first assume that the behavior of that thing conforms to some sort of natural laws, laws that can eventually be understood, specified. Humans assumed that all entities had souls: e. g. rocks, dirt, gas, etc. To them, only 4 elements had existed. E. g. if one would drop a rock they would explain it as earth wanting to be with earth. This makes the rock animated, giving them a soul. Rene descartes: famous philosopher, mathematician, was relaxing in a park after a nervous breakdown; a statue moved in front of him blew his mind, he thought before: movement with intention is something possessing a soul. What actually happened: he stepped on a pressure plate & hydraulics: believed that animals are complex biological machines but they don"t have a moved the statue soul.
