Document Summary

Week #10 lecture #8: monday november 16, 2015. Can only convict someone if they"re guilty beyond a reasonable amount of doubt (98%/99%) and needs guilty act and mind. In the case of mental disorder, behind the guilty act is there a guilty mind. Someone commit crime in their own best interest without caring about others. Public misconceptions about ncrmd (not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder aka ncr defense) Media responsible for most of these misconceptions. Person didn"t act in way in consistent w/ their own interest. If not motivated by self-interest, then not a crime by law. E. g. , grey hound bus case, man killed guy beside him, chopped his head off and ate his liver, got off w/ ncr and play down by media. But when someone is found ncr, they get treated and rehabilitate them and integrate them back into society. Treated in forensic hospital, if don"t respond effectively to treatment, confined indefinitely.
