PSYC59 LECTURE 03 o Writing assignment: DUE FEB 7, 2016 before 5:00 PM. o Triangular model: how written forms of words interact with semantics and spoken form of words o Past work people tend to focus on one direction of processing, up until now there has been an anglocentric view = focusing on English language. o Transparent language = simple one-to-one mapping of ontology and phrenology of a language like Spanish o Audio-visual matching task: spanish, french and English would be the slowest. o Its harder for French to go from spoken to a singular spelling, and it would be harder to recognize the letters on the screen via. visual noise = greater opacity o Visual noise  supplement poor visual information with clear auditory information, problem is that auditory information supports many different spellings. o Opacity of language is being internalised and is influencings people’s ability to perform all sorts of tasks. o We can manipulate what people say and hear, but we can’t manipulate what they mean for people. o Imageability: measuring word meaning, certain properties of what a word means. Does semantic influence processing and perception of words? o 39;40. You press a button is it an S or SH, and a lot of activation is going on. The brain is super interactive. o The production and perception of speech is not two distinct entities, the language system is super interactive and we will see how it works both across perception and production. o TMF used to target the motor strip of the brain = right on the edge of the frontal lobe and parietal lobe. o If you stimulate the lip part of the motor strip it will bias your ability to hear the Ba vs. the Pa or Ta vs. Da – language is interactively involved with the perceptual system. o Production system is involved in shaping the perception performance of a tasks, because we are primed for communication, and were correlating these things as we see it in the world, we use this to perform our articulations. This needs to happen in early learning since the brain is more plastic and even when were adults, regulating voice (auditory- perceptual system). o Semantic-lexical-semantic lexical, see
