Week 12 lecture #10: thursday november 26, 2015. 2 chapters taken off from final --> not sure which one, couldn"t hear properly. Humanism was reaction to pessimism and determinism. Pessimistic view of human nature, reaction to anxiety. Cognition was reaction to over-simplicity of s-r models, also rose due to changes in it. Want to look at things observable and measurable. People are not ruled by stimuli and reinforcers or by unconscious instinctual impulses. Each person is a conscious, rational being who can exercise free will and choice. They have control over what they think, feel and how they behave. Environment has an effect, but human beings can transcend it to some degree. Idiographic approach is necessary for study of people. Idiographic= specific to the person, look at one person at a time. Needs are filled sequentially, from lowest to highest. Maslow did not believe that you had to completely satisfy each level before moving to a higher one.
