Lecture 5 Bonus assignment: 1 page defining empathy and why and where it comes out and give rationale for it (site). Empathy & in-group out-group memberships  NAcc-motivational. Activated when viewing someone treated unfairly and feel revenge rather than empathy. Activated when people feel pleasure from others feeling pain.  Affective divergence: how you interpret other’s (friends or strangers) emotions (correctly or not).  Group formation plays role in emotion interpretation.  Speed of identifying emotion contingent on group membership.  Group membership may alter meaning/interpretation of emotion expressions as well as response.  Affective responses to given target outcomes depend on group membership of target.  Signal value – responses to facial expressions reflect meaning or function of those expressions for individual perceivers.  More likely to catch on emotions of in-groups than out-groups.
