RLGA02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Polytheism
Document Summary
Not every day, but it"s a pattern of repetition. Religion is something every day, an ongoing thing: worshiping. Too narrow: there may not be any explicit worshipping of a supernatural being, a set of values. Too broad: cultural values shared in a community. Religion is inherently social: provides an ultimate meaning. What is the purpose of my life: believing in something that you haven"t personally experienced or witnessed. Faith: a divine being or supernatural force tends to be invisible or transcendent. We have a leap of faith or a suspension of doubt in terms of the existence of this force: god is beyond us, but also nearer to us than ourselves, group solidarity. People tend to consistently have similar beliefs: polytheism is the idea of the worship of multiple gods.
