Red blanket patients: they pay extra to stay in private hotel-like rooms on the top floor, which come with a butler, gourmet food, plush bath robes etc. Evaluation: social stratification is the way valued resources - wealth, power, prestige - are distributed, and transmitted form one generation to the next. Weber"s three hierarchies: class, income/wealth, life chances, prestige, status groups, deference and respect, lifestyle, power, capacity to attain one"s goals despite opposition. Lower 90% financial assets held: 20: inequality in wealth and income in canada (and other western countries) has increased since the early 1970s, vs. redistribution (explanations will come later) Prestige: recognition/deference, lifestyle, past, status groups, aristocrats. Ses : originally have random samples of people rate various occupations, now predict scores by combination of education and income.
