The process of specifying what we mean by a term: operationalization. The process of specifying the operations that will indicate the specific value of cases on a variable: measurement. A process in which we collect data and classify cases by categories to represent variables. The point in the research design where major concepts such as the iv and dv are identified and formulated. It is the process of creating clear, consistent, rigorous, and systematic definitions of concepts. (291) When you have too simple conceptualization, it losses all meaning. Must be careful so we can define that appropriately. The activity of finding measurable variables for your concepts. Allows for consistent observation of variables (know exactly what you are looking for) The better you defined and measured your variables, the easier to analyze. A variable is a concept that can take on more than one value (300) (if not it is a constant)
