In the past, status was inherited (less than 200 years ago). That population of people who owned land or factories passed that down to their children and that gained wealth. Now people make their living through employment and most jobs we get need acquisition of educational qualifications. You can t inherit educational qualifications so you need another way to gain high status. It is though the educational system that yours and mine social status could be acquired. Two forms of selections: selection can be within the educational system and between the schools, streaming y steaming is the practice of sorting and categorizing students in their y aquiline groups. In ontario until the 1960 s and early 1970 s students were streamed into separate and distinct programs. How is streaming justified? y teaching is much easier if all students had the same ability or the alternative is called mixed ability teaching.
