Lecture 1
What Is Education?
4) Working jobs become tightly bound with education.
5) Education entails transmission of culture from present to upcoming
generations.
6) Primary socialization we receive is family (what you learn from parents,
grandparents and siblings).
This is also informal and casual education (ex: not getting lectured by
family).
7) What we will in education is formalized and deliberate.
From ages 5-18, school isn’t a voluntary exercise; rather the government
says you must attend. Kids do drop out and they are prosecuted by the
state.
Three things: 1)?, 2) when they go to school they find themselves
educated in particular buildings which have been built for that purpose, 3)
we have designated a group of people with the specialized task of
education our children (teachers).
Three Themes: Selection, Socialized And Social Organization
1. Selection
Reason we are interested in school is because one important thing
schools do is they select and saw out different groups of individual
students.
Education selection is important to improve and describe the sort of
education system in place between 1940s-1980s.
Stratify the student population into different outcomes by selecting them in
different education systems.
All pupils would be required to take an exam at the age of 11 (the 11 class
exam in the earlier years). If you passed that exam (minority of kids
passed), then you were selected into grammar school where you had a
strict academic curriculum. By 15-16, you were then qualified for a further
2 years of schooling, which would finally give you qualifications for
university (18-21). You graduate with a degree and get to pick some of the
best jobs in society.
Those pupils who did not pass the exam at the age of 11 had to attend a
different type of curriculum. While those who passed learned about
physics, geography, Latin, etc. These students learned more basic,
applied concepts. Most of them would leave school at 15-16 without
qualifications. Labor market they entered were jobs with no skills or semi-
skilled.
Selection is where you have a minority who is groomed for the best
positions in society and the majority having to accept more mundane
positions also works internally in schools.
People take different courses in high school (university versus college
level) and also the types of courses (math versus sciences).
