Karl Marx

History/biography:
- born in 1818
- like Compte, 20 years younger
- contrasted Compte, Marx did not believe science could provide spiritual sense
- Marx did not belief spirits did not hold society together
- material crisis (way which we work, labour, and make things)
- analyze capitalist society, understand how they deform, whether expressed in religion
expression
- created many concepts
- understanding Marx means need to live
- his father is lawyer, parents came from rallies, Jewish parents
- father was child of scientific enlightenment
- father introduced Marx to classical sociology…etc.
- Marx studied law, transferred to Berlin (which fell into young Hegalian)
- role of intellectual history in structuring society
- both believed social structure changing
- young Hegalians radical, religious
- 1843, Paris was centre of intellectuals
- spends a lot of time reading Adam Smiths
- Marx collided with Engels
- Marx saw revolution and thought it could happen twice
- 1845, Marx went to Belgium and joined “lead of the just” – communism lead
- 1848, revolutions broke out in Europe
- movement was shattered, and people spread out in Europe, some came to America
- Marx went to France and worked in museum
- was poor and unable to get real job
- capitalist society was important, three of his children died of malnutrition
- Marx spent life on capital
- 1863, labour movements from countries worked together, formed international
- Marx thought published capital in 1867
- died in 1883
Critique:
- three key aspects:
1. past -> future
2. present -> future
3. immanent
- critique = judge (render a verdict about society)
- “this is wrong/right/correct”
