SOCB43 [LEC.12]- SIMMEL METRO MAR.30/2017
Metro & Mental Life
Tragedy of Culture
Conflict of Culture
RECAP: Between more and more people working in specialized roles, more distinct notion of
uniqueness b/c doing something of you. Durkheim linked DOL with notion of autonomous
unique person. Idea you are doing something separate from others. But the uniqueness came
from job you were doing, the uniqueness of the job. Simmel takes it a step further. Uniqueness
doest oe fo speialized jo, ut it oes fo the jo euiig less of ou pesoalit.
E.g. accountant. Because you are using specialized techniques, you learn various rules, become
a epet, ut hat that does is oe oue a aoutat it leaes spae fo othe pats of
ouself ot elated to eig a aoutat e deeloped. Speialized jo futio ist the
function that gives you uniqueness but it leaves room to do other things besides what the job
requires. Can be something at night/vs day. Free up space for personality to develop
independent of work.
Metro & Mental Life
Contrasts living in big city with small towns.
Cities bring out the feeling of wanting to be an individual, but at the same time being a
small fish in a big sea.
The tension of a massive system that sucks away individuality, but this desire to be
unique and individual.
Village
City
Stimuli
Slow-paced, Regular,
Expected, Lasting (Ex: see
same people at same time
every day.)
Fast-paced, Various,
Unexpected, Momentary
Consciousness
Unconscious, Emotional (life
is more go with the flow)
Intellectual, Hyper-conscious
(have to be hyper aware of
surroundings b/c so much
happening)
Economy
Bartering/personal relations
Money, impersonal. ($$
defines life much more than
in village life)
Time
Natural Rhythms
Clock time
Personality
Warm, intimate, neighbourly
(people know who you are
ad ae / thee ko
you for while)
Reserved, aggressive, blasé
aggressive b/c have to
keep your personal space
blasé: cultivated boredom,
nothing you can do can
surprise me. Always seeing
crazy things. Pull back and
develop protective cover.
