- Social authority that gathered around scientists. Was mostly restricted to religious
leaders now went to scientists. Authority to tell the truth.
- Increase in science employment and degrees

o Organize society in a rational way
o Expansion of bureaucracy
o Creates new types of authority, decision making, personalities, pushes away
other types of authority and value

- Struck by how the massive modern metropolis is a new thing in the history of humanity.

- E.g. can move anonymously in a crowd vs. in a small village. In a city you can melt into
the crowd.
- Makes you feel more free. Free from constant observation. On other hand: problems=
sense of boredom, blasé, seen/done everything and not surprised by anything, its all
been seen before
- Lead to expansion of individuality. Think of development of personality as most
important thing to do
- Transformation of cultural experience
o Impossible to develop all parts of self as fully as can be
