Document Summary
P. 312 definition of sociology by weber. Sociology as a science that studies meaning behind people"s actions. Will tell you the general typology ( set of types") for what appears to be random actions. These are basic types of ways in which people get meaning out of what they do. The theory of action = the typology of action. If you have the typology, you"ll know what to look for when you go out & try to study a concrete case. Typologies help reveal what organizes the actions of others so that it is not just random". 4 major typologies: goal-oriented / purposeful rationality. In a lot of ways, it"s the most rational. Your actions (in the future) may or may not change based on its consequences. E. g. , you punch someone so you can coerce them into taking notes for you: value-oriented rationality. Does not care for the consequences/outcomes of your action. Action is fully based on one"s values.
