Reviews: Mead address the issue that are very important to other peopleWeber
and Durkheim, is science and Morality. Weber is about science can tell what is the
life but it is not based on the science to figure it out; sci is tell the goals; sci is the
highest value of daily activity, and the most important thing in life and can give the
purpose. Durkheim, oppostitely, says that soc sci can tell what is life in a very
general way which allow the social solidarity; it is for something political and
practical goal. Mead, wants to find the middle ground; you dont have two
perspectives; the key is you need to have a more fluid conception of human being in
their goal which is people can reframe and reconstruct their goals in their actions by
using their intelligencescience; so that sci did both, which is the means of
achieving the goal and also changing the goals and reframing the goals; for example,
public health: ppl figure out to improve the health in the society by using sci, if more
people using birth control then the general level of health is higher; but this is
contradict to religion; but it is the time of opportunity for religion to rethink and by
doing these the religion could be more complex and redefine their goals; as well as
sci; using the example of hospitalin which it is doing good through improving the
general healthppl is complicated machines [by using the animals as the

experiment objects because they said the animals do not have soul]; the redefinition
of what the modern science is: the point is on the sci side, sci has various goals and
redefine the goals. The ultimate image of the moral progress is the basic worry…
Weber think the way to be perfect is to have only one single purpose which might
change over time; so progress could be the enemy in the purposeso making moral
progress: transforming yourself in the process; chaning yourself to be better to live so
that it is a evolutionary image—a harsh vision.
Simmel’s Life: German name; born in Berlin in German in the center area of urban
sociology in Germany. He is at home in urban life. His life is marginal of German
culture as Jewish, which is disapproval in Germany. After he finished high school he
studied philosophy in University, which is about Music. After graduated, being
attached to Berlin urban life, and the only interaction in the big city, he becomes as
the insider and outsider. He becomes the most popular lecturer in university. He
wrote a book named Philosophy of Money, or the book or essay of modern hour, the
important figures in German public, book about sociology; in constrast to Weber, he
was not interested in the political thing since his status is not accepted in German.
In the WWI, he supports the Germany. I love German and therefore I wanted to live
and support them in order for He died as a popular figure without direct any
works.
The first topic is: he tends to define what the sociology should be? They are trying to
define sociology as science.
Nomothetic Vs. Ideolographic approaches
Nomothtic: sociology is sci and should be former sci and having certain formulars
Ideo: human life is inherence and different and you cannot formulate certain
general rules but you can use the historical events to ….
oIn P28: presentation of real the historical process of the other
oWeber: he tried to come up a third way; the ideal type
oSimmel accept Webers….individualism; and develop the ideal types into a
deeper way ofHe is trying to define the middle ground but it is not the
ideal type but the forms of Sociology.
Association: the ideas of the forms of association; P23, :associoattion exist when
individuals enter the interaction…. So that we can analyze the association and
interaction between ppl as which is not reducable to anything else like biology or
psychology or physics. He has the similar goal to Durkheim, which is not based on
