Document Summary

Socb49 social inequality week 8 thursday, february 27, 2014. How would you define standard work: full-time, benefits health care, pensions, living wages, union, legal protections, migrant workers, under the table, casual/part-time temporary, precarious, lack of benefits. Precarious work (not securely held or in position) Flexible: will the contract be renewed, presence or absence of a trade union, control over working conditions, wages and pace of work, union representation or the law. Globalization: rapid growth of new markets, international competition in the context of profit maximization. Racing to cut costs by lowering wages: for many this means a widening of poverty and inequality. Emphasis on: individualization individuals are entrepreneurs, responsible for themselves. Governmental power individuals should govern themselves: privatization. Dissolution of welfare state: free enterprise, anti-worker legislation/policies. All of these processes are gendered: feminization of poverty. Triple burden of women : mothers, workers and community advocates. Women in canada are more likely to engage in precarious work than men.
