SOCB49H3 Lecture : State, Productive and Reproductive Labour
Document Summary
Stratification patterns according to skill level and prestige: white-collar jobs need skill, blue-collar jobs don"t need skill. Gendered division of labour: specific tasks are usually carried out according to gender norms. The division between these two groups is not natural, but specific effort has been made by governments to draw clear lines between them. Specifically to get women out of the private sphere and into the public sphere during the war. After the war there was deliberate effort to push women out, and back into domestic sphere. War will be over quicker if they step up and help. Compared domestic jobs to factory jobs, saying that they were basically the same thing. Told women that they had the skills and abilities required to fill these jobs. Responded by picking up the jobs positively and enthusiastically. Lots of movies were put out about being a housewife.
