How central a norm is and anything that"s social is a norm. It doesn"t have to be physical or conduct. It can be anything social and illicit a negative reaction. Sometimes you hear deviance as statistical rarity or something being unusual. Deviance is something that doesn"t follow a social norm. Deviance is something that offends or subverts a social norm. Generally, mainstream or dominant norms are where large number of people agree on. Example: being polite to someone is the norm. When someone says how are you or how"s your day? you respond, fine, thank you. And you? we have specific roles to play. Civic inattention socially uncomfortable to be in close physical contact with a stranger for a short period of time so you ignore their presence. Ie. elevator it"s socially dangerous to protect yourself, you don"t make conversation. Norms that we all participate in like civic inattention. Being polite makes that casual interaction socially manageable for us.
