Division of labour characterises work in all societies. Industrial capital societies are distinctive: due to the complexity & acuteness of division of labour. Human societies operate with dol b/c its more productive & efficient to do so. Latter part of 19th & early 20th, 2nd industrial revolution. Dol became increasingly specialized: ford case an example of how dol actually worked in the 1st of his plants. Said it created an alienated labour force, major source of conflict: major source of job dissatisfaction. If jobs broken down into small tasks, you can get rid of skilled workers & get less skilled workers. As an owner, it helped cuz you had to pay them less wages. Strike issues: he was thumbs down. Durkheim: didn"t dispute that contemporary societies were riddled with conflict, like marx, he saw conflicts coming from diff ethnic & racial backgrounds.
