Marx: wanted more of the french rev. aristocrats wanted to slow down! Rev. a sad moment, end of good old days. Tocqueville saw dangers of democracy, but also thought transition to new world was inevitable. Also have a clear eye of potential dangers so to have potential remedies. Travelled to america to study democracy there: thought he could see the future there. Problem in france: although revolution, the remnants of old order were still there. America never had that aristocratic order, easier without baggage.
