Lecture 4 January, 31, 2012  Rationalization o How did it come about that people in the west in Europe developed this intensive, rational, calculating, methodical approach to all aspects of life?  According to marriage, work, life in general  If fail (rational threat) then change it o Appreciate the rationalization of life 1. Science  Refined ideas about the world  Weber says nowhere else but with ancient Greek do you find a mathematical basis to astronomy or systematic experiments in Europe 2. Art  Ranging sounds in systematic way in music  Happened first in the west along with musical notation o Allows abstract thought according to music  Development of perspective in painting (Leonardo Divinci) 3. Architecture  Distinctive western buildings possible because of mathematic ideas 4. University  Organized in systematic way to promote knowledge (modern western invention) 5. Bureaucracy  Specialized civil service (work for city or Gov.)  Been around in a lot of place but as the basis of how people conduct their lives in a society (organized on own basis) – highly rationalized organized is western creation  Number of civil servants (there are ~40 in Rome) 6. Constitutional state  State with constitution based on some theory  Written framework, don’t go on prophetic leadership or ancient way of thinking o Rationalization of politics 7. Capitalism  Rationality of the pursuit of profit  Quantitative, continuous, methodical, etc. o Increasing integration of how people live their lives rather than subservience to specific charismatic people o More about structure of society – society parts are related to the other o Tasks devised by a worked out function o Great symbol of rationalization of social life is bureaucracy  Bureaucracy and charisma o What are the main characteristics of bureaucracy 1. Jurisdictional areas  Defined; function that you have a specific job  Roles: define who’s in charge and the scope of your work  Usual way of organization o For the most part people divided by tradition, loyalty to family line, a charismatic leader, etc. 2. Office hierarchy in a bureaucracy  Lower people supervised by higher people with a clear, systematic chain of demands  Career advancements are based on learning specific functions 3. Files  Codified documents keep track of what’s happening  Kept no at someone home  Part of organization; essentially the brain o Knows things longer than those who occupy certain roles within the bureaucracy  Allow roles to persist beyond those in the role o ROLE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PERSON 4. Full-time job  Get salary; what you care about most  Whole job can be office manager o Make sure everything is executed effectively 5. Operate by General rules  When organization supposed to be operating in specific way and particularly outlasting people, rules must be general 6. Appointment  Upward mobility through appointment (election)  If job dependant on appointment, care about performing as well as you can  Something outside of bureaucracy that gave you that position 7. Get paid salaries  Salaries goes with the role  Rewards in career on based on (not productivity or work you do) role o Self-worth and value tied to role (status from role) and how well you move up into a higher role 8. Leads to ethos of office  Based on feeling that you’re submitting to impersonal duties of the office o Doing what the office demand and in the government position you have o Purpose defined by position and doing it well  Don’t rent out office – feel like you’d be demining self  Start to feel it’s your duty to organization to follow what the office says o Moral (ethical) feelings o Why are bureaucracies valuable and powerful? 1. Impersonal
