Description
Lecture 10 March, 27, 2012: week 12  SOCIAL FORMS: CONFLICT, HIERARCHY, SOCIABILITY Conflict - Important issue - Simmel didn’t care why conflict occurs, and doesn’t normally assume conflict as bad or dangerous to society, conflict can be both dissociative and associative (even if you’re in a conflict you have a relationship ex. US and Soviet Union- they were never as close as they were during the Cold War) - Constant push/ pull is one of his hallmark ideas - Conflict+ integration (every social unit has both conflictual and harmonious conflicts) b/c the tensions or conflicts give the group competition and interest ex. A football team, marriage (we have the ideal image that couples wouldn’t fight, simmel says fighting is healthy you’re getting more connected, stronger relationships are when you realize the fights are internal not giving up and getting a divorce, gives drama and excitement, the person you marry is the person you are going to fight the most with - 2 levels of unity (peaceful/ conflict), there’s a deeper level that has both ex. Life, opposite is death and a deeper life - Conflict for itself: ppl create opportunities for the sake of fighting ex. UFC, boxing, martial arts (fighting sports) you are excluding everything else just for the back of forth of fighting, has its own positive rules - Temporal dimensions: common features regardless of what it’s about, the order in which the conflict occurs 1) ppl who start out in a conflict, initial high animosity towards each other, this difficult past bonds you even more 2) you start out in a very close loving relationship but divorce and hate each other, makes life worse Hierarchy - Command/ obedience, any relationship is a 2 way street - Super- ordinates (higher) - Sub- ordinates (lower) 1. Single individual in charge: typically the group becomes more unified and there is a sense of togetherness (ex. God/ dictator) 2. Plurality: committee of 3 or more, Sparta had 2 kings, Rome had 2 emperors, tend to have a higher level of objectivity and down play unique/ personal situations (you would have to get all ppl part of the committee to agree and follow a general rule), tends to be much less forgiving and more violent b/c it’s easier to pass on responsibility and not take individual blame, and under a principle (makes the relationship connection much more impersonal, highly segmented) 3. Under principal/ law: impersonal authority, cold relationship, servant+ master (like Alfred and batman) have an intimate agreement but now in modern society, ppl aren’t as trusting or personal Sociability * - Conflict for itself, you have a way of relating with ppl to just enjoy the
