We can organize theories of power into three types of camps. Social control 2 strategies: coercion physical force, hegemony gramsci. Stuart hall: a discourse is a group of statements which provide a language for talking about a particular kind of knowledge about a topic. A discourse does not consist of one statement but of several statements working together * Organized systems of knowledge that make possible what can be spoken about, and how we can speak about it . Discourses exist because of a complex set of practices which try to keep them in circulation and other practices which try to set them off from others and keep those other statements out of circulation . Encourages sameness and excludes those who don"t conform. Power is not only exercised to control. Not only top-down example: stemming from a sovereign power. Blends components of marx, gramsci and foucault. The method we"ll use to think about representation is interpretivism.
