POWER
- classic definition by max weber: ‘the probability that one actor in a social
relationship will be in a position to carry out his [or her] will despite
resistance, regardless of the basis on which this probability rests’
oabout having power over opposition of others
owhat are the sources of power?
- Relational (not absolute and static)
- Subject to changing social relations and circumstances
- Everyone has capacity to resist power
- But, how to assess the workings of power?
- Need critical analysis
WHAT DOES CRITICAL ANALYSIS MEAN
- C wright mills
oMen do not usually define the troubles they endure in terms of
historical change and institutional contradiction. The well-being they
enjoy, they do not usually impute to the big ups and downs of the
society in which they live
Does not relate self fulfillment to the rest of the world
Ex. Bad day =/= geopolitical issues
Not made because we do not understand the
connection between them
- Sociological imagination
oWhat we experience in various and specific mileux… is often
caused by structural changes… to be aware of the idea of social
structure and to use it with sensibility is to be capable of tracing
such linkages among a great variety of mileux. To be able to do this
is to possess the sociological imagination
oNot just personal troubles
oAbout grasping relationship between self and society, biography
and history
oSeeing individual in broader context
