Mcclure usually fingered at a subject before the magazine decided to launch on a story. The subject that was being kicked around was the great industrial monopolies, known as trusts that had come to dominated the american life. The natural choice in the end was oil. Tarbell had grown up in pennsylvania oil country, her father has run business making oil barrels and small refinery. Tarbell pitched the idea to mcclure and he said it would think it over.
