Document Summary
Associated with erik erikson whose work influenced developmental psychology and sociology (especially symbolic interactionism) Identities are non-essentialist (they are fluid, multiple, and shift depending on specific institutions and cultures). There is no core identity; people have a range of identities. Identities are always in process; they are never complete. Structure: do youth have more in common as youth or in terms of other social categories (i. e. gender, ethnicity ) 179): multi-dimensional approach, macro (social structure, micro (social contexts) Subjective (agency of self/ego): matrix of domination, age. It is impossible and undesirable to separate out all the different identities we occupy in order to examine gender alone. Patricia hill collins (1990: dichotomies don"t exist. Either/ or oppositional thinking must be overcome: dichotomies are often put into ranking systems (men are superior to women, heterosexuality is superior to homosexuality etc. ) Real people can"t divide themselves into little boxes and rank their various statuses.
