Document Summary
A way of reasoning, along with a collection of tools and methods designed to help us understand the world . In statistics, we try to understand the world using data (collection of observations, numbers, characteristics, or other items) Statistics is about variation: variation in data, we do not see everything, we possibly imperfectly measure. Statistics help us to understand and model this variation so that we can make sense of an imperfect picture of an imperfect world. Data is a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables; restated, pieces of data are individual pieces of information. Individual cases (individuals) are the objects described by a set of data. A variable is any characteristic of an individual case. In what units of measurement is each variable recorded: example: weights might be recorded in lb"s or kg"s. Variables: categorical (or qualitative) variable [or categorical nominal]: variable that places an individual into one of several groups or categories.
