Short essay question
Question on the test was the narrative of western
- No, because it’s hard to distinguish between good and bad
- Yes still relevant, because you still see much of it in today’s movies
- Romanticizing of popular culture into tradition/classic. Ex: classical music as classic, then jazz as
classic, lady gaga will be classic. And classic rock. Contrasts to canon
- Class of audience of high culture and pop culture audience should be important. In today,
elites listen to a lot of popular culture music. And music is more easily broadcasted everywhere
now, you can hear free music everywhere now. In 1800s, less technology
- Who are the elites in today’s society
- Music hearing all the time, concerts aren’t the same. Get bored of it. Maybe this is what makes
classical music more prestigious
- Cultural policy funding – feel like lines are not blurred in cultural policy. Right thing to do.
Become a tradition to fund classical music, to preserve. Prime minister doesn’t want to be
named the one to ‘kill culture’. Don’t see this changing any time soon. --- in the future, funding
might stop because general public won’t feel it is important anymore. Depends how you view
the future will progress
- One feels that lines have never been blurred between popular culture and high culture even
during 19th century. We always have that distinction in our heads.
- Pattern of funding – funding in 18th century, still funding now.
- U.S. government vs. Canadian government. High culture distinction originated in Boston,
popular culture also originated in America. Popular culture = “American culture”
- Talked about whatever is in the past is classic. Also relates to once artists die, their works
become more valuable. Ex. Elvis, painters, etc.
- See acceptance and blurring in art forms like visual arts, etc.
- High culture has become a social convention – not really appreciating it anymore
- Popular culture uses classical music, classical music uses pop music too. Though, we don’t see it
in symphonies, because of canon.
- Arts that need for funding. Once they try to appeal to the masses for funding, they won’t be the
same anymore or at least won’t be in same regard.. might become commercial/popular art.
- Leavisite – Educational system affects what is considered high art. What is taught to us is where
our mentality is developed from. Persistence of canon
- No postmodern movement, and hard to blur because both sides don’t understand the other
side/both sides extremely well, esp. if they are so devoted to the one they are passionate about
ex. Tso leaflets, packages for example classical music and dresses in a certain way to attract
others.. will people actually listen. No blurring because of specialized industries. Popular music
use classical music, there is something happening, but not sure what it really is – no real
engagement. Maybe there isn’t a good understanding from all 3 sides: pop, high and audience!
- Staying with European concept, pleasing donors
- Not throwing out canon, augmenting it, adding it, etc. movement in both directions.
Contemporary canon that has for example, Top40s of each year
- Certain arts, either popular or high art are categorized or re-categorized by institutions
