Vpma93 lecture 1 introduction to listening and sound. Looking to understand sound and understand why sounds sound very different from eachother. We hear a large range of sounds- hertz (vibrations per second = 20hz -20,000hz). We can"t hear higher frequencies that other animals can hear. There are various levels of loudness (ex. if pluck a string people at the back of the room can"t hear it as it the air would be very soft). Instrument has a sound board that has a sound box, where material is vibrated based on the displacement of air. Pitch- high sounds vs. low sounds sound waves vibrating at a much quicker pace 20,000 vs. 20 hz. Musical sounds low note on a piano is 27 hrz highest is 2200 hz. Tone- sound with definite consistent pitch, performers playing a clarinet (they way they play and sustain the tone)
