During period of depression, people treated jazz as an escape. Performance in paramount theatre in time square attracted high school students & teenagers because it was not performed in nightclub. Arranged him to appear in movie a rhapsody in black & blue: Armstrong appeared differently in movie than in performance. Did not like the idea of business in music, want to play music his own style instead of appealing to the audience. Black musicians were not allowed to stay in hotel, forced to sleep in the car. Some psychiatrists said jazz made people wanted to forget reality. Made sound sounded like charm, but fast playing. Goodman was reluctant to perform with wilson on stage due to the policy that black & white performers could not perform together.
