Lecture 7
Globalization and Transactional Feminism
Transnational Feminism
Transnational: issues that cross borders and demand a global understanding (Bromley)
Transnational Feminism: considers intersections of nation, race, sex, gender and economics on a global
scale with an intentional focus on the connections between imperialism, colonialism and nationalism
with gender.
Ex: Global Implication of buying feminine products
- Buying products for cheap at local locations such as Walmart
- The product is manufactured in foreign countries
- People go to the cheapest place to find such products because of our life style and finances
Economic Globalization: “The integration and rapid interaction of economics through production, trade
and financial transactions by banks and multinational corporations with an increased role for the World
Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as the World Trade Organization (Burn)
Cultural Globalization: “refers to the transnational migration of people, information and consumer
culture (Burn)
Gender and Globalization
Key Issues raised in Burn Reading:
• Labour – women working in poor conditions in mass labour corporations and not getting paid a
fair wage
• Poverty – in order for corporations to have keep working the way they are doing, they need
individuals that are so poor, they are willing to work in such conditions
• Migration – some women who migrate in order to get jobs do new get paid a fair wage
• Violence – some women get abused while on the job
Neoliberalism
Key aspects of neoliberalism include:
• Privatization – that private corporations will control things that should be public or used to be
public
• Austerity – an economic plan on getting government spending as low as possible without
consideration of how it will affect others ex. laying off jobs
• Deregulation – decreasing the regulation of private business. Individual thinking is linked to
deregulation
• Free trade – trying to eliminate or lower taxes with trades contracts between countries
• Increased private sector – at expense of government spending
• Elimination of “public good” or “community” and replacing with individual responsibility.
