Occupational segregation: the employment patterns in the labor force whereby women and men are concentrated in different types of jobs. Female-typed jobs have lower pay and prestige than male-typed jobs and there are fewer female typed than male-typed jobs. Single women will then work as a teacher or a nurse maternal characteristics: women in these jobs would get paid less than men. Jobs that have been feminized: babysitters, nurses, teachers, domestic work. Systematic discrimination: assumptions about gender roles, women are less likely to be hired, promoted and make less money, assumptions of motherhood has women role in job limited, ex. The women will get called away from work, permanitive leave, less likely to move, not always available all the time: exclusionary culture, both formally and informally, many workplaces becomes a very male environment, ex. Meetings happening at strip clubs or at golf courses: direct discrimination, can be seen in military where harassment is used a tool.
