WSTB11H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Triple Oppression, Intersectionality, Homosociality
Document Summary
It is not always possible to separate categories of race, class and gender (or other categories) Categories can change with time and space (e. g. identifying with same religion but practicing differently). In other words they are situational, contextual and contingent. Term intersectionality introduced by kimberle crenshaw in 1989. The term replaced the concept of triple oppression that assumed homogeneity of each category (e. g being oppressed as a woman , as a working-class person , as a racialized person ) Mohanty critiques the priory definition of the category woman as constituted by gender only (thus excluding important constituent of identify, such as family, community, culture, religion, colonialism, race oppression, globalization, etc. ) She highlights the importance of taking into account factors that contribute to creating the category woman ; e. g. economic factors, family, class, religion, age, location, sexuality, etc. Why discuss the family: the family is a public institution.
