Document Summary
Abs201y tutorial 7 (0301) wednesday november 5th, 2014. The role of elders: there is no single word for elder. Being an elder does not necessarily imply age, rather it implies experience. Elders are treated very differently in western societies (are put in old-homes, are disrespected) Being called an elder is a sign of respect. Shows that this person is a knowledgeable person. Indigenous world views vs. english world views: half-sons are the children who have cree mothers and european fathers, through an english worldview, these individuals are referred to as half-breeds which is a very dehumanizing word. Colonization, residential school systems, loss of language, racism: solutions need to be found to assuage pain and trauma. Language michif (language of the metis: language from the perspective of elders, spiritual connection with language, has to do with one"s identity it is who you are , not just a means of communication.
