- A woman (business anthropologist) said social science adds value to business in three ways:
o Company cut down costs by bringing down no. of employees from 120 to 20.
See things from different perspective.
o Anthropologists are people watchers!
By taking detailed notes, analyzing, etc.
Help pharmaceutical reps. -> Don’t outlash the doctors. Affects their status.
o They understand culture!
Trying to sell mobile phones. >> Freedom to talk anywhere!
Found by talking to people in Czech Republic >> Last thing people wanted to talk
about was other people hearing you talking on phone.
Freedom to talk didn’t work!
So they focused on privacy!
This made the difference and allowed for better marketing.
Helps in creating commercials -> Chocolate Bars

- Who got out? Who didn’t? Blame on people?
- Structural Inequality >> The actual devastation was the “double” -> Refers to the social and
political responses to the catastrophe that amplify its disastrous effects to the extent that is it
difficult to say which is worse.
- New Orleans is not quite a Full part of America
- Bad infrastructure
- Racially segregated society.
- Middle Class and Upper middle class were able to leave the city without any problem.
- Even if their houses were destroyed, they had insurance policies.
- The rest were left behind and weren’t able to leave.
- They had the most to lose (though they had the least to lose).
- They didn’t have the means to leave.
- After the Levi’s broke, the chaos wasn’t too high. But media exaggerated it.
- People that were left behind were asked by guards and securities to not stay together and not
look like you were starting a riot. They were not ALLOWED TO LEAVE. HAD GUN POINTS!
- Grass higher than the limit -> government takes the house. Anthropologists are helping by
cutting the grass and maintaining.
- Moment of the Hurricane -> Collective Unconscious.
- These are people do not have FULL RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES OF American Citizenship.
