Document Summary
Languages and signifying behaviour in general limits what we say, think and do. Often happens below our level of consciousness. Can be hegemonic (ellicites conformity from some people) Stress on how conformed we are in languages and as individuals. Lecture themes: languages, dialects, ideologies, social variation: accents, sociolects, registers. Hegemony: 3 approaches: manufacturing consent, conformity and resistance, incorporation (resistance to self) Words used in this category are languages, dialects, accents and register. Language, dialect and accent are popular but not scientific term, scientific term is. Language is a dialect with an army (like a state behind a lanauge) Serbian+croatian are all languages with their own states but culturally similar; meaning if you know 1 languages, you nearly know the other pair. Dialects: cantonese, fukinese, mandarin; tagalog, ilokono (not all these are states) Called dialects because they have no army (army of populance, not military) but are in the same nation.
