Document Summary

Idea that we"re all moving towards modern, urban, secular society. Cities = sites of homogenization/ melting pots where people of diverse origins change themselves to be anonymous. Urban form = expected to be mass melting pots. Studies show: cities have grown but they haven"t been like pots - bounded groups = re/created in cities -> order, meaning, identity; provide assistance. I. e. ethnic networking to find jobs, apartments, services. Specificity of where you live in city = big deal (i. e. missisauga = city but not thought of as city like toronto) Secularization: expected to follow from exposure to science and education. But really, religious identities = stronger and more salient (i. e. radical islam/buddhism, Massive reemergence of religious persistence + flourishing in a new direction (not passive) Industrialization and urbanization: all parts of the world will have transition from farm to factory/country to city - repeat of industrial revolution (19th century europe)
