We have early considerations of mental illnesses from eugenics which peg them down to inheritable factors; i. e. it was all about nature rather than nurture. Part of the movement was that it was not socially appropriate for these people to have children since their condition could be passed on. This could have to do with trying to improve the race, social awareness (i. e. mentally ill being a draw on society), etc: nelly mclung was a suffragette and a eugenicist. She didn"t think that the mentally ill should have children. Eugenics and the nature view came to its height in wwii. The rst people that were subject to the nazis were the mentally ill. This led to a whole backlash after wwii against eugenics in which we shifted to the nurture aspect. Now we think that nature-nurture is a false dichotomy and that when we are dealing with the brain it is hard to distinguish the two.
