Lecture 4: Geographical Variation
Lexical Field
-category/field
-field of words, notions, concepts that are actualized/given form in a language
-i.e. colour
-contain terms that are necessary for details (adjectives); mix varies depending on where you
are in the world/language spoken
-1969: Berlin and Kay: examine colour terms of 80 languages
-interview people, make comparisons
-focal points
-system (2 points): black, white (10% of languages only have black and white) - develop
the structures/languages that we need
-system (3 points): black, white, red
-system (4 points): black, white, red, green/yellow
-system (5 points): black, white, red, green, yellow
-system (6 points): black, white, red, green, yellow, blue
-english has a system of 7 categories: black, white, red, yellow, green, blue, brown
-system: terms for purple, pink, orange, grey = found to be in combination in languages
which had focal colours
-lexical field tells you value of certain things in culture
-Whorfian hypothesis: language predisposes you to see things in the world that is named
-if it is not named you can feel/sense it but you don’t really know it
