Lexicon = a word that cannot be broken down anymore; it is a meaning itself. Language = allows us to refer to objects, states and events with sound clusters. Phoneme = sound; most languages have 20-60 phonemes. Double articulation = a small set of sounds to make words/ sentences/texts. [phonetic transcription] = does not represent the same sound. Primary bilingualism = people who are born into having control over one or 2 languages. Secondary bilingualism = people who eventually learn a 2nd language. Minimal pair = have the same combination of sounds except for one (cat vs rat) Noam chomsky is influential to the modern debate of language acquisition and proposed universal grammar and poverty of stimulus as a result of why children can learn language so easily. Stephen pinker suggests that children are born with language of thought and claims that that ug is present in our genes e. g. foxp2.
