Most youth come from a family that doesn"t have a full nuclear unit (i. e. parents are incarcerated, etc. ) > likely to seek security and safety from a gang. 44% of youth gangs are likely to graduate from high school. Legal jargon: english for special purposes unique to profession. Youth and adults unfamiliar with jargon are still expected to abide by such language. Judge will tell the lawyers to refrain from using colloquial language in the court room. Oral language competencies and literacy -> affects the right that the youth has to be heard and participate in the court room setting. They are supposed to be participating actively so they can prove they understand the situation and won"t reoffend. Use gambits: terms that involve slang, profanity, etc. unique to certain groups that rely on diminished forms of vocabulary because of lack of oral language competencies. Body language affects ability to be believed/people"s perception of what the youth is saying.
