Lecture 4 Presentation: Buenos Aires + Los Angeles January-28-14 12:11 PM *check Blackboard next week to see proposal feedback Outline: - Revisit social and cultural capital - A short history & contextualization of East Harlem - Structure & Agency Concept of Respect - Primo, Ray, Caesar - 'juice' and unpredictability, tendency for violence action elicits respect in others - You know someone has respect based on the stories surrounding them - Unpredictable outbursts (like fights, illegal…), they earn respect … people will fear the person who is crazy and full of outbursts - Generate fear that can strike anyone at any time - Protective tendency at the same time (fear the violent person, respect them in way acting in protection of oneself) - Respect someone who can distribute favors - TV show: Breaking Bad ○ Drug dealers ○ Good example of this kind of respect - Pierre Bourdieu ○ More capital you have the more power you have ○ He took Marxist idea ^ ○ And shaped it to be cultural power Social position = contirbute to social power ○ ○ Cultural capital - - Collection of symbolic elements and traits that communicates to background - Transmitted to family (background) - Sense of collective cultural capital (shared with others) - people go to school with, work with, travel with ○ Same tastes of entertainment, intelligence, identity • Major source of social inequalities ○ Can hinder social mobility • Bourdieu grew up in small working class town in france, he achieved great success, conscious of upbringing, got a lot of scholarships • The way he carried himself, mannerism, success he achieved he was marked in some way by his past and his upbringing • He felt an outsider • This led him to be interested in why poor or lower-class kids perform poorly than upper middle class kids • Coorelation between cultural capital and academic achievement /success • Heavily impacted by cultural capital Three Types of Cultural capital - Embodied ○ What you know ○ How you present yourself ○ Your character, way of being ○ Acquired and inherited ○ e.g. the way you talk (accent, diction, dialect, standard / informal, vocabulary - sophistication, communciation skills affectiveness) - the way you talk signals something about social class - Objectified ○ Possession or appreciations for cultural goods ○ Objects ○ e.g. having an expensive art collection, taste for fine wine, fancy cars, ○ The way you translate cultural capital to tangible goods, that communicates about social background - Institutionalized ○ Credentials and qualifications ○ e.g. universities ○ Also what type of university, name of the university matters ○ Where you work (e.g. Bay street law firm vs. probono law firm) ○ Titles (e.g. Dr., lawyer, ...etc) - Cultural capital is not static - Social capital ○ Network ○ Size and quality of your network ○ Who you are connected to ○ What their status is ○ The quality of these connection - can you actually call upon these people to do things for you? How quickly can you deploy these people? Term 2 lectures Page 1 ○ deploy these people? ○ This signify the 'quality' of the network - how close you are with them ○ Interpersonal relationships ○ And status of these relationships In regards to the textbook ○ Ray can not read the newspaper article - demonstrates his cultural capital ○ But his social status, has 'juice' people fear him, and people watch out for him, which also builds other's cultural capital ○ People know his story ○ Bourgois describes himself as a 'professor', 'anthropologist' used as *his* cultural capital ○ Mistaken as u
